The city of Newcastle in England has been around for at least two thousand years! It lies on the banks of the river Tyne in the north east of England. During the middle ages the coal industry was in existence in the area. Its port was the major staging point for its export. This helped to make the city wealthy. Shipbuilding also became prominent in the area and at one time one quarter of the worlds ships were built in Newcastle.
Trading and other industries such as steel made Newcastle more prosperous. The city was a commercial and industrial hub. It led to the development of large department store, theaters, educational facilities and museums. Today most of the heavy industry has disappeared from the city.
