Pitlochry is a small Scottish town that is very popular with tourists. It is at the beginning of the highland mountain area and became popular with tourists after it became accessible with the arrival of the railways. The town’s architecture features local stone styled with a strong Victorian influence. The town has much historical significance including visits by General Wade, and Queen Victoria.
Pitlochry has something for everyone including outdoor activities such as climbing, fishing and hillwalking as well as more gentile pastimes such as shopping. The town also has cultural significance featuring the local Pitlochry Festival Theater. As many as eight different shows can be seen in a week at this theater. There is a good selection of Pitlochry hotels and guest houses for visitors to the town.
Nearby is the Blair Atholl Distillery which is one of the countries oldest. It was built in 1798. The town has another distillery – the Edradour, which is one of the countries smallest distilleries. Both distilleries feature visitor centers. There are ample pubs and restaurants in the town with a great selection of food and drinks.
Pitlochty has a dam between the River Tummel and Loch Faskally. You can view the famous salmon ladder through glass walls and see the fish moving upstream to spawn. The dam produces hydro electricity for 15,000 homes.
Pitlochry continues to grow as a tourist resort is a justifiably popular place as it has a wide array of activities as well as great hotels and bed and breakfasts.
