Kite Flying in Singapore

In the year, roughly, of 1500 AD, mention is made in the Sefarah Melayu, of start of the beginning of a new sport in Malaya, kite flying and kite fighting. In the beginning kites were crafted from objects of nature, various plants and leaves. The art of making kites in the way is Daun Wau Karun. Not long after it began in the states of Malaysian, it made its way to Singapore. In the making of kites, bits of cut glass were built into the body of the kite, which enabled flyers to cut the strings of the others’ kites. Which ever kite was left at the end, without the string cut and still flying was the winner of the fight. Other aspects of the fight offered up prizes as well, as whichever was the most beautiful or the biggest, or flew the highest or created the most loud of hums. So most often the kites were painted brilliantly and some required five or six people to help with launch.

Once launched, the kites and their fliers compete in the spectacular show from dawn until dusk, or until the last kite is left flying. Kite flying has remained a very popular form of artist expression and a well attended sporting event in Singapore. One such township where these competitions remain so is Marine Parade. Far from fancy shopping malls, restaurants and luxury Singapore hotels lies this Urban Planning neighborhood. Here on the eastern side of the island, near the sea, the public housing buildings stand amidst the business district and industrial sites. The kite flying competitions here are not confined to the spectacular festivals and celebrations. On any night during any given weekend, hand made kites can be seen, filling the sky. The competitions here are very competitive and remain to be a popular traditional past-time for the residents of this neighborhood and are pften watched by residents of 5 Star Singapore hotels.
