Jaipur – The Pink City
Jaipur is a city in the Rajasthan area of India and is known as ‘the Pink City. It is the capital and largest city in Rajasthan. It is a relatively new city and was built in the 18th century by the astronomer king Sawai Jai Singh. It is a major hub for visitors to the desert cities of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.
Jaipur is a fast growing city with several impressive Rajput forts that are popular with tourists. These are the Amer fort, the Jaigarh fort, and the Nahargarh fort.
Jaipur can easily be explored by foot. Many of the buildings have a distinct pink coloring (hence the Pink City name). Jaipur is close to the city of New Delhi, and you can travel to it by road, rail and air. There are many places to stay in the city including five star Jaipur hotels.
Jaipur has a walled city which includes the City Palace complex. This includes many buildings, coutyards and temples. Nearby is the Jantar Mantar a fine astronomical observatory built by Sawai Jai Singh.
The Hawa Mahal palace should not be missed and provides some remarkable views of the city. Close to the walled city are the Ram Niwas Gardens which includes the Albert Hall Museum which includes displays of fine art including paintings, sculpture and carpets.
