Hong Kong’s Famous Skyline
Due to the incredible population density of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the city of Hong Kong is easily the most vertical city on the planet. Hong Kong is home to 38 of the 100 tallest residential buildings in the world and over 7500 skyscrapers with more in various stages of development. When you combine these grandiose giants with the beauty of Victoria Harbour and the majesty of the mountains surrounding Hong Kong, the result is an incredible skyline, considered by many to be the best in the world.
Travelers come to Hong Kong for a variety of reasons, including business, culture, food and shopping, or to visit Hong Kong Disneyland (which opened in 2005). They can choose from a wide range of lodging options with everything from budget getaways to Hong Kong’s 5 star hotels. Because the population is centered in the city, the surrounding areas have plenty of lakes, beaches, mountains, and countryside to explore. Most visitors will want to take time to appreciate the gorgeous skyline and perhaps check out some of the remarkable buildings.
Two International Finance Centre is the tallest Hong Kong building. It stands 1320 feet high (415 meters) and is the 7th tallest office building in the world. It is part of the International Finance Centre (IFC) which also includes Tower 1 and the Four Seasons Hotel, and the IFC Mall. Completed in 2003, Tower 2 is the same height as the former World Trade Center. In 2010, the International Commerce Centre is scheduled to be completed and will exceed Tower 2’s height by over 260 feet.
Central Plaza is the 11th tallest building in the world. It is also home to the highest church in the world. The Plaza has a unique triangular shape that provides better internal office spaces and better harbour views. It also boasts a pyramid-shaped spire which makes it easily identifiable in Hong Kong’s skyline. Other easily recognizable structures include the Bank of China Tower, designed by I. M. Pei, which features a sharp, angular facade and The Center which holds a neon light show every night.
The ten tallest skyscrapers in Hong Kong (in descending order of height): Two International Finance Centre, Central Plaza, Bank of China Tower, The Center, Nina Tower, One Island East, Cheung Kong Center, the Cullinan Towers (North & South), and the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong.
