Riding bicycles has been an extremely popular recreational activity since they were first invented and arrived on the public market. For many of us sports are as a big a part of our childhood memories as birthday parties and summer vacations. We loved going to the ballpark to watch the game, then hanging out afterward hoping to get an autograph from our favorite player. Although we dream of being a big league player someday, for most of us it is nothing more than a dream. The oldest form of collectable sports items is the baseball card. Started in the late 1800s by a tobacco manufacture, the cards were printed on the back of the package and contained basic information about the players. Quickly picking up popularity, cigarette manufactures begin to do the same, and eventually gum manufacturers who brought in a younger audience. Although production declined during WWII, Topps chewing gum came out with new color cards that had the players picture, vital information and current statistics that quickly helped revive the phase. Today, cards are made for nearly every sport including baseball, football, and basketball and, depending on the condition and the player featured, can be worth thousands of dollars.

Another popular item to collect is equipment from their favorite sport or player; including jerseys, hats, and balls. The items can either be from a particularly important game, such as the Super Bowl or World Series, or they can be autographed. Having both the item and the signature makes the item worth even more.

Anytime you collect anything it is important to watch out for frauds. It’s best to keep the phrase “If it sounds too good to be true it usually is” as a motto that can save you a lot of money and heartache. The world of sports collection can be fun and exciting when done with your eyes open. A fan of the NFL enjoys watching the game, but an avid collector looks for ways to preserve the sport and its history one item at a time — whether it’s signed footballs, NFL watches, or player bobbleheads.

It was predicable in a number of ways. Iranian President Ahmadinejad gave a speech on Nuclear Weapons at the UN on Monday, that was by all standards fairly predictable. No one had been looking forward to hearing what the Iranian President had to say on the topic and for good reason, he had no plans on addressing his own country’s problems with nuclear weapons, but rather had a lot to say about everyone else. If nothing else this is a good lesson in deportment. No one really hears what you have to say if you always say the same thing, and no one wants to hear what you have to say if you are only going to condemn others.

Iranian President’s UN Speach

It is that time again for horse racing fans in England and the biggest event of the season is about to get started. Once again Kauto Star will be going head to head with Danman, with a wild victory and the score set at 1-1 for these two horses, it seems no one can say who will win this time. As it stands, Kauto Star’s odds seem to be in the lead with his extravagant win at the King George on Boxing day as well as winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup last year in a record breaking race in which the championship was taken back for the first time after having been defeated the year before. Denman has also shown recent winnings at the Hennessy Gold Cup in November, but that is feeling an awfully long time ago and his odds have been lowered a bit because of it.

The next in line for best bets look like Imperial Commander who has done well lately, as well as Cooldine. Although Carruthers has been doing great this year it looks like Tricky Trickster and What a Friend have the next best chances based on their recent racing history. From there it is all downhill as some of the best contestants from previous years will not be joining in this year. At least one of them has gone on to bigger and better things though, so there are no worries here. If you want to bet on an underdog, take a look at Madison Du Berlais, Albertas Run Calgray Bay, and Casey Jones who are all at odds below 100 and still look like there is a chance one of them could come in higher than expected. While most of the others aren’t really worth a look, the rest of the line up looks like My Will who is running with the odds of 100 along with Mon Mome, and Aran Concerto. Mr.Pointment and Cerium run at the bottom of the list with odds of 200 and 250 respectfully.

What are the Odds for the Cheltenham Gold Cup

With the Austrialian Open Tennis Championships coming up, it gives tennis fans an opportunity to brush up on their history of the sport and of the legends who have made the sport what it is today.  Though there are many great female players today, perhaps none of that would have been possible for them if it had not been Billie Jean King that came on the scene.

Her life has been one filled with many firsts.  Perhaps the most important first in her life was her first tennis racket bought when she was eleven with money she had saved up doing little jobs here and there for family and friends.  It was about eight dollars, but would soon provide her with much more than that.  King has always had a drive to be number one and to be great at something, namely tennis as she later found out after a set of tennis lessons that were free.

She has had to fight discrimination throughout the years due to her nonconformist attitudes.  For instance, she was not allowed in a photo with her peers in ’55 because she wore shorts and the skirt women were expected to wear.  She was playing at the Los Angeles Tennis Club at the time for the tournament being held there.

However, such discrimination did bring her down.  Rather her pushed her harder break down barriers and boundaries for women in sports.  In ’71, another first for any female in any sport, she won prize of one hundred grand.  Yet this was not good enough for her either, because the prize money for men and women had been disparate for quite a while, the male tennis player money being more than the women’s.  After fighting for equal money, she won in ’73.

Perhaps more than any other player in tennis, she has had the most impact due interest in not only making tennis more interesting but also more fair.  Her politicizing of the sport has helped to make it a more diverse and gratifying one to watch.  She will no doubt be mentioned during the commentary for the Australian Open in passing, such is her influence still.

King of the Tennis Court

Thirty nine years ago, on the first day of November, one hundred twenty seven people entered a marathon.  Only fifty five of those people managed to run 26 miles and 285 yards, to be exact, and cross the finish line.  1970 marks the first New York City Marathon, a course that looped many times throughout Central Park.  Today the race has grown and attracts some of the finest and well trained athletes in the world.  Each year more than ninety thousand people apply to run the marathon, and many are turned away as the limit of the race is just thirty eight thousand.

World class runners who meet the requirement of a set qualifying time, those whom have been denied participation for three years in a row, or those running for a charity program are bumped to the top of the list.  For everyone else it is the luck of the draw, literally.  Participants gain entry through a random drawing lottery.  The reasons many travel to the city, stay in the five star New York hotels, eat some pasta, and wake up early to run, are varied.   Many runners choose to stay in the Gramercy Park Hotel.

For some, it is the thrill.  The atmosphere that day is filled with the energy and the adoration of the many people, tourists and residents alike, who drop what they are doing and come out to cheer the runners on.  To take place in the marathon is big, it is one way, that for one day, someone can become part of the history of this greatest of American cities.  Nowadays, the course does not just wind through Central Park, but leads one through each of the 5 boroughs.  It is now the largest marathon in all the world, and to be part of that, is as stated, to be part of an historical event.

For others, the serious runners, take part as this marathon is part of a series, called the World Marathon Majors.  Other marathons included in the series are the marathons held in Boston, Chicago, London and Berlin.  And in the years when they occur, the Olympic Games and the World Championships are included.  There are just two winners of the World Marathon majors, one male and one female.  And these two split at the end a prize of one million dollars.  There are many reasons for one to visit New York in November, and the Marathon is one of those reasons.

2009 US Open fan guide

The New York Jets are an American football team that is based in the New York metropolitan area. They are extremely popular locally and also have national fans who may or may not center their favorites on their local team. Sports tickets to their games are often considered to be great gifts, and they have a high fan turn out every time they play. They are part of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference and play their home games at Giant Stadium, which is located across the river in Florham Park, New Jersey. The stadium was named after the other NFL team that plays there, the New York Giants.

The Jets were founded in 1960 as the New York Titans. They were formed as a charter member of the AFL. In 1963 Andreas J. Grosser bought the team and renamed them the Jets. They have the unique distinction of being the only team to defeat an NFL team in a Super Bowl, which occurred in Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts. The team had a shaky beginning and had difficulty attracting crowds to their home playing field at Polo Grounds. This partially represents the incredible journey the team has experienced on their route to become the major team they are today, with such a strong amount of popular support.

One of the main reasons for the rise in their popularity and overall recognition and support was the arrival of Joe Namath. He joined the team in 1967 and quickly led the Jets to experience their best seasonal record, which at the time was eight wins, five losses and one tie. Affectionately nicknamed Broadway Joe, the quarterback quickly rose the level of social respect for the team and became a sports star. By 1968 he had led the team to a thrilling defeat of the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship Game. This was the same season that they would go on to defeat the Colts in the Super Bowl, which was considered to be a great upset.

The New York Yankees are one of the most popular, and also one of the most despised baseball teams in the country. The popularity is due to their outstanding team, and the strength and competitive force they’ve been throughout their history. They have an enormous and loyal fan base. Their strength and solid record is also the reason they are not liked by many people who favor an opposing team. They strong history and record make them a threat to any team in any game. The Yankees have many players that are local and national celebrities. This contributed greatly to his love of the game and also established the Yankees as his favorite team. He showed an early talent for baseball and by the time he was in high school he was already recognized as a star player. In 2003 he was inducted into his school’s, The Kalamazoo Central High, Athletic Hall of Fame. He has since received great honors, recognition and fame. He became the only player to win both the All-Star Game MVP and the World Series MVP in the same year in 2000.
