Miniature Train in Austin

As a kid, I had a great affinity for trains, no matter what the size.  I loved especially the miniature railroads that are designed with children in mind, and one of the best of these is located in another favorite of mine, the city of Austin, Texas.  You’ll find on that city’s southwest side, just east of the Mopac Expressway, and off Barton Spring Road, the Zilker Zephyr Miniature Train.  A part of the concessions at Zilker Park, the train is a pleasant diversion for parents and their kids, running on a narrow-gauge, light rail track, which leisurely takes you and your family along scenic Barton Creek and Austin Town Lake.  The train departs every hour at the top of the hour on weekdays and every half-hour on weekends, as long as the weather allows, and only costs a few dollars.

You can bring food and drink onboard, which you can purchase at a nearby concession stand.  The train itself circles a large field in the park, comes round the river and then back again.  There’s a number of ducks and geese and plants native to central Texas, which you can point out to kids as you go.   You may want to note that parking can be hard to find on a weekend, and that part of the ride may be in the sun.  Definitely bring a hat.  If you’re traveling, check into one of the fine Austin hotels and come have one of the best miniature train rides in Texas.

If you’ve never been to Austin before, you should have a great time, just exploring the city’s natural environment, from Zilker Park and the Barton Springs Pool, to Austin Town Lake.  At dusk, you can watch over a million bats fly from under the Congress Avenue Bridge.  Depending on the age of your kids, this can be a fascinating and thrilling experience.  Take your time, though, and get to know this wonderful city.

Wandering Birmingham

There was so much to do all over Birmingham, my family and I didn’t know where to start first. But, it was our family holiday, so we wanted to fit in as much as possible. We book the same Birmingham Hotel we book every year, because, after going there for five years, the staff knows us by name, and they tell us they really enjoy watching my children grow up. Surprised? Don’t be, Birmingham is full of great people who care.

This year we decided to check out and explore Birmingham’s spectacular landscape, go to the beach of course and then walk through the hills and dales. First we went to the hire-wire forest adventure named aptly, Go Ape , just outside of the city. My kids never laughed so much, and I never worried so much, but at the same time, I had just as much fun as my kids. Then the next day we were off to reliving the 1066 battle of Hastings. It was well organized and they managed to not only entertain my children, but they educated them at the same time. My kids didn’t feel one bit that they were in class getting a history lesson. I really recommend that all of history be taught this way; my children still remember all the details of the battle and why it happened. Ask them about any other history, and they just shrug their shoulders.

Then for the rest of our stay, we beached it. Besides swimming in the ocean, we spent time hunting for crabs in the many rock-pools, building sand castles, burying each other in the sand and eating the picnic lunch the hotel would prepare for us. A week really isn’t enough, but, anytime I get to spend fun time with my kids, is the best time. I know they feel the same, just seeing them smile when their heads hit the pillow for the night, tells the whole story.

Floating Oceanic Waste

An island, mobile and floating through the waters of the earth, twice as large as the continental US is growing in size and affecting countries, oceans and seas far away from its originating point in the Pacific Ocean. Just off the coast of California, heading towards Hawaii and Japan, this acts as an anti-sponge, releasing garbage and sludge into the atmosphere of the ocean, the largest ‘dump’ in the world. This has effects as far away as the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The currents of the underwater swirls have carried the shite far from its original resting place. In the Mediterranean Sea, floating in the waters that boast many luxury Ibiza hotels and Mallorca resorts, advertising clean, pristine waters, 75% of the oceans pollution comes from human rubbish. Of that, 95% are plastic shopping bags. Once thought a great idea to have a contained island for all the plastic garbage, it is now considered a soup, spreading and leaking out into all the worlds’ bodies of water. And when the soup hits land, it’s as the day after a New Years party, a confetti of scattered and multi-colored plastic debris. One scientist put it in a not so scientific term, saying it was as if the floating island of trash, floats by and ‘barfs’ on islands in its path.

Just about a quarter of the trash is what gets tossed off boats, cruise ships and tankers. Things such as kitchen pots, footballs, children’s toys and suitcases. The other junk comes from consumers on land. On top of questioning how this could possibly happen for a short period of time, such as oil spills that cause such upheaval and a rise to environmental arms so to speak…these are occurrences that get cleaned up relatively quickly, this floating rubbish has been happening and growing and dispersing itself for years. A captain of an oil tanker, upon witnessing this first hand, sold his assets and his business shares to become a full time activist. In ten years the amount of plastic waste in the oceans of the world is expected to double, should the humans of the world continue their use of disposable containers. Makes one think twice about the plastic, but good for you, contained bottled water.
