Shuffleboard has been around for almost 500 years and is a game of skill rather than a game of chance. Back in the day, it was called by several names, like ‘shrove groat’ or ‘slide groat’ during the 16th century in England. The groat was a large British coin worth about 4 pence. Later, the groat became a silver penny and the name changed to ‘shoe penny’ or ‘shovel-penny’. The British colonists brought the game over to America and it really began to catch-on during the early 20th century. During this time, beautifully handcrafted shuffleboard tables began to make an appearance. Shuffleboard hit it big time in the 50′s in bars and pubs. However, pool halls began to edge shuffleboard out of the limelight in the 60s, but today, there are well over 5 million people enjoying the game of shuffleboard either in their homes or at their favorite bars.

The games enjoyed being played on the shuffleboard are more than what most people are familiar with such as Knock Off, Horse Collar and Crazy Eights, which are the 3 most popular games to play at home. Knock Off is the most common of these games and it’s the official shuffleboard game for tournaments and requires the most skill and finesse.

The Fourth of July, Halloween, Christmas and Easter are just few of the standard holidays in which it is common to see people dressing up in costumes. We just recently celebrated the Fourth of July and people could be seen costumed in Uncle Sam suits, and various patriotically themed attire. Not only people who are performing in special holiday events wear costumes, but the general public can be seen decked out in full holiday propaganda and this is actually something that many people look forward to.

Costume for plus size adults and other individuals is a growing market as people compete to have the greatest Halloween costume, or Santa Claus suit. Dressing as elves, Mrs. Claus and reindeer is also popular as are nativity costumes in religious services. One of the most popular and regularly seen costumes on Easter is of course the celebrated Easter bunny. Numerous parents have dressed up in this familiar costume at some point in their children’s early lives and it is moments like these that make life special and become cherished memories.

It is extremely common to feel the character of the costume you’re wearing, so the next time you don’t quite feel like hiding Easter eggs , put on the bunny costume and you’ll find yourself hopping about in no time.

Holiday Costumes for All Seasons

Checking Twitter this morning only to realize that all my followers were gone. Actually, this also was the case for a few other people I knew, and had therefore heard about it before I checked twitter. There were still people’s status updates, but the profile said there were no followers. It turns out it was a glitch and it probably shouldn’t be worried about. Twitter claims that they were fixing a glitch that allowed you to make anyone accept your friend request so that celebrities would have to follow your feed. It was a large glitch, discovered and published by Gizmodo. In order to fix it all twitter profiles can not follow or unfollow people, as well as the profiles all claim that no one has any followers. They are claiming it will be back up and running soon.

Twitter Follower Bug Fixed, But All Followers Gone

The James Beard Award is given to the best food and drink book that year, and this year it has gone to an outstanding book called “Save the Deli”, which is a testament of love for a great deli. In his time researching the book he ate at more than a hundred delis in North America and Europe looking for the perfect meats. The author lives full time in Toronto, but has been staying in New York while working on the book.

The newest phone from apple, the 4th Generation Iphone (which has been nicknamed the 4G, but probably will not as it most likely does not support 4G networks yet) will be unveiled on June 7th. There has already been a lot to do about this new phone when one escaped from an apple employee as he was partying in a bar and made it into the hands of a couple of tech bloggers. Because of this, people are expecting less of a surprise in what the new Iphone features will be.

New Apple Phone to Be Revealed

One of the most unusual tours one can take in New York City would have to be in following the path of the Beatniks by frequenting their favorite bars and pubs. Dylan Thomas’ last watering hold, the White Horse, is on the list, as are Kettle of Fish and Cafe Reggio . Although some of the spots were frequented by Ginsberg and Burroughs, it’s the ghost of Kerouac who lurks behind it all, and that might make just about anyone a little uneasy.

There’s no formal tour, of course, because herding people who are interested in both the Beat Generation and in bars would be as easy as herding cats, but it’s always an option. Literary tours are usually pretty fun to try, and this one holds a lot of promise, although it holds equal parts despair. That goes with the movement.

John Clellon Holmes wrote more eloquently than anyone, perhaps, about this movement. His article for the New York Times Magazine in 1952 is still some of the very best writing about the Beats. Without the benefit of any hindsight whatsoever, he wrote in the middle of the busiest part of the storm, and manages to capture all the essentials, including a discussion of how that generation was so reluctant to adopt any labels, or to make any kinds of prescriptions for would-be Beats. It was a life, not an art form, and it wasn’t meant for mass consumption.

Lots of the ghosts are still around, the people having passed from one side of the ground to the other, and there’s something reassuring about their iconicity. It’s almost as if anyone with a restless heart has the possibility of becoming a revered ancestor. A stay in a hotel in the city can bring some of the romantic energy out of every visitor, but it’s a reciprocal proposition. The spirits in the walls of these revered taverns do seem to like to be remembered, and the living inhabitants like a good conversation.

Facebook unveiled its new Safety Center on Tuesday, and it is a large improvement on the old Help Center. There are now special areas for law enforcement, teens, parents, and educators. There was apparently some help in changing up the site with consultations from Common Sense Media, The Family Online Safety Institute, ChildNet International, and many more. There has been a fiasco going on in Hollywood as Jim Carry jumped on his computer to tweet his feelings about Elin, wife of Tiger woods. Whether what he said was right or wrong doesn’t seem to matter to her supporters, nor does it matter to most of the media who is calling for a ceasefire on twitter. Here’s some video.
