Haunted Castle of Peebles

Peebles, Scotland was originally a small market town though it actually played a major role in the wool industry of the Scottish border. This is an interesting feature of the small town, though it in no way is the major draw to tourists who visit it each year. The beautiful and natural scenery of the town and its surrounding area attracts locals, tourists and day visitors from the nearby Edinburgh. In addition, many of its residents commute to its larger neighbor every day for work, and most of the guests who stay in a Peebles hotel will also venture over to Edinburgh during their stay. In addition, during the month of August, Edinburgh hosts its Annual International Festival and Fringe Festival. Sometimes accommodations in the city are difficult to attain and performers and audience members may choose to stay in Peebles instead.

However, while enjoying the unique and charming aspects of the town, tourists are also drawn to some of its major historic attractions. Neidpath Castle is just one of these. This historic castle as probably been around, at least in its earliest version, since the turn of the 14th century. The United Kingdom is full of great buildings, castles and cathedrals that date to the medieval period and earlier, even though Peebles is small, it is no exception. One of the intriguing aspects of the castle is that has been reported to be haunted. The Maid of Neidpath, as she is affectionately known, was the daughter of the Earl of March, William Douglas. According to Sir Walter Scott, who also gave her the name, she died of heartbreak after her father refused to allow her to marry her true love, who was considered to be below her station. Sightings of the Maid of Neidpath have reported her to have appeared dressed in a long brown dress with a white collar as she sadly roams the grounds.

Ignorance as a Defense for Corruption

How does corruption thrive and what will it take for the anti-corruption agencies to break the cycle?  This is a question that is difficult to answer.  Temptation and greed are two of the aspects that fuel corruption, they are human characteristics and therefore, just a bit unpredictable.  They need permissiveness in order to thrive.  In a system without a set and honest order of checks and balances in place, without a standard policy of the use of a suspicious activity report, wherein the distribution of wealth remains out of balance and where the decision making process is clouded in obscurity, corruption will flourish.

In many countries and societies today, even in those locations where the systems…economic, social and legal…are deeply entrenched, corruption is alive, and not only alive, but well.  Those who argue that the fight against towards corruption can not be won, are just stating the age old dilemma of one side versus the other, the north versus the south or the Hatfields versus the McCoys.  This is a thought process that over-simplifies the issues.  Some will say that corruption in the form of bribery,  such as gift giving, is just a mis-understanding between two different cultures.

This is perhaps a valid argument, were it not for the fact that everything, about every culture, every aspect and every norm can simply be looked up on the Internet, the claimed ignorance or mis-understandings makes the mind reel.  Yes, values and customs and norms are culture specific, but really, ethics and morality must play a part.  Each member of a culture is well aware of what is not only acceptable, but what is transparently honest behavior.  Regardless of cultural differences.

These differences are what prompted the formation of the Transparency International organization.   IT states that members of a society know what is customary to their own culture, and they know the kinds of actions that violate those customs.  These ‘differences’ can no longer be the defense in an argument where corruption is concerned.  And the formation of such anti-corruption organizations is one way to set about a comprehensive understanding among those from different societies, from different cultures.

Drug Abuse in Hollywood

In a recent study, the medical community discovered some surprising results: about one out of every ten people in the United States has experienced some sort of detrimental problem associated with alcohol abuse.  In drug related problems, about one out of every thirty-five people in the United States and above the age of twelve has used some sort of illegal drug.

The need to change normal perception states is not an entirely unusual one, according to Marc F. Kern, a doctor specializing in addiction psychology.  Because drugs can often bring on pleasurable states and emotions, ones that far outweigh any associated consequences, younger people are more at risk for continuing to use them.  They are more naive and thusly more at risk to use drugs as a way to cope with negative thoughts or situations.  The trait of using experiences that makes us feel good to deal with those that do not originally started as an evolved trait but has deteriorated with the influence of drugs.  With the increase in the prevalence of drugs in societies, there has been in an increase in the number of residential drug treatment facilities.

No group is more acquainted with rehab than actors.  Tatum O’Neal, the youngest winner of an Oscar, claims in “A Paper Life,” her autobiography, that her abusive and aggressive father and unstable mother were part of her childhood.  With easy access to drugs and a neglectful environment, she was easily susceptible and became a cocaine addict at age twenty.  She has been in treatment for drug addiction many times since.  According to another addiction psychologist, Leon Wurmser, an abuse childhood is one of the many traits that show up in the history of many drug abusers, breaking the barriers of age, race, and economy.

Another reason alcoholism intervention is often a common part of the Hollywood scene stems from the ability it gives actors to come down and relax from a long day’s work.  Using drugs to control sleeping and waking patterns is another reason actors are so susceptible to addiction.  Chris Penn died at forty because of his problem with cocaine.  The drug gave him the ability to work more and work longer on a project he was deeply involved with.  He wrote, was in on building the set, and was also responsible for working on some of the film equipment.

However, as long as an actor stays out of rehabilitation centers they are not thought to be addicts.  Often actors are also pampered because of their talent and creativity, two traits that often show up in the person who is also edgy and full risky inclinations.  As a result, their habits soon spiral out of control.  Though seeming to live charmed lives, many actors often suffer addictions problems of a more etreme variety.

Channeling Singapore

So, my issues with channeling when my ex-husband did this had been at a peaceful state for about 4 years, but when I finally left my marriage and went with Thomas, I was suddenly thrown out of my comfort zone. There was, as some of my closer friends would say, ‘a new sheriff in town’, Thomas. I realized that suddenly I started going through some huge battles within myself. This time connected to some very deep embedded things would all of a sudden bubble up from my subconscious. I didn’t feel the security I was so used to experiencing with my ex-husband, and on top of that, my ex-husband began his small campaign to try and turn people against me. Of course, I didn’t know this was another test to see if I would go into my old energy habits of doubt. Which I did. But, it really wasn’t as bad as before, and I found myself soon over it and right back on track again.

One of our overseas trips a few yeas later was to Singapore. I had been there a few times before, but this time, this particular visit, I found to be very much like Darwin, Australia where my son lives. Singapore was hot and humid and yet very wonderful because the people of Singapore are so delightful. The Singapore luxury hotels where I stay are really very marvellous and accommodating. Singapore is such a clean place and so multi-cultural. I had channeled each time at book stores and yoga centers. This trip, my host, offered to have the channeling at a small theater. This worked out so much better than other venues I’m used to. The theatre accommodated about 100 people, were I’m used to 30 people. But, all I can remember is just how hot and humid it was that trip.

Zoe Tay Singapore Actress

Zoe Tay is an incredibly talented Singaporean actress who is well known as the Queen of Caldecott Hill. She was born to farming parents and originally was not interested in performing but preferred instead to try a career as a production assistant. Meanwhile she has had an incredibly successful television and film career, and many guests in one of the five star hotels in Singapore are likely to see her if they turn on their the television set in their room.

Another name this talented performer is known as is the Thousand Faced Lady. For an actor, this is an incredible compliment, a person in hearing it in their everyday life may not think so. At the age of 16, Tay began her working as a model and incredibly, she was almost instantly nominated as the model of the year. Shortly after that she auditioned for Star Search, a move that she almost resisted doing, but was talked into it by close associates, family and friends. This decision, changed the course of her life and career. Her journey into acting, was a reluctant one that required prodding by those around her.

However, after she felt she had some experience and began to trust her instincts and sills, Tay and her career quickly took off. She landed a job on the television show Crime and Passion and had the role of being caught in a love triangle between two men and emotionally torn between the two. Her first serial came with the 1988 broadcast of My Fair Ladies. This show featured fellow Star Search winners Aileen Tan and Jazreel Low. Her major breakthrough that put her in the category of household name came in 1991 when she was cast in the television series Pretty Faces.  More hotels here

Elephant Caves Mumbai

Mumbai, India is incredibly rich in cultural heritage and major historical landmarks. It is an ancient city and while it has a rather diverse population, much of the society has been based on Hindu beliefs and representations from the religion’s sacred texts and mythological associations. In addition some of the traditional arts and performance genres also have sacred or religious routes and influence. However, there are other landmarks and great social and entertainment options that are not specifically associated with the Hindu religion. Tourists staying in the four star hotels Mumbai often chose to experience as much of the culture as possible, and sometimes this involves going outside the city limits. The elephant caves are an excellent example of this and are definitely a popular attraction for most tourists.

The caves are located on Elephanta Island in the Arabian Sea, very near to Mumbai in the Mumbai harbor. Inside these caves are relief sculptures of Hindu deities, which date back as far as the 9th century. These carvings were created in honor of the god Shiva and most of the sculptures were cut from solid rock. The entire cave system comprises an area of 60,000 square feet or 5,600 square meters. It consists of one main chamber with 2 smaller ones that form a lateral pattern with additional courtyards. One of the beliefs associated with the sculptures and reliefs in these caves is that it is the actually home of the god Shiva. Many people, both locals and international visitors come for both worshipping purposes and also to see the artifice involved in creating them. One of the most prominent and often considered to be the most important sculptures stands twenty feet tall, or just over six meters, and depicts the three headed Shiva. The three different heads correspond to the different aspects of Shiva’s character. More Delhi hotels

Dolphins in Madrid

What to do in Madrid? Why, if your travel with my gal Wendy, ya’ll go to the aquarium. Wendy is from Dallas, Texas and really like dolphins, dolphins, and any thing dolphin related. Here at the Zoo Aquarium Madrid it is called a dolfinarium (cute). She is not so interested in any of the luxury hotels Madrid Spain has sprinkled through the city like starfish in an aquarium (sorry). I wanted to see bullfights and all that Hemingway guy stuff and drink anise and get into fights (not really, not really on the fights) but Wendy no way would have that, I would have to sneak away and no chance of that so I contented myself to being entertained by the amazing antics of the dolphins. In fact this was a really nice, magnificent coral displays, more aquatic species that one can imagine. Wendy seemed thrilled with the dolphins, though she felt a little sorry for them inside a tank. Well, it was a very very large tank. I’m more of a bird guy and really dug the aviary , especially the parrots. And the macaws. I asked Wendy why she did not become a marinebiologist or something and she got a sad look. Turns out she is really kind of nervous around water. We agreed to talk about this over a beer later. Unexpectedly, the zoo also has pandas, and they we just visible to visitors when we went by, their chubby bear like faces peering out curiously. It is hard to think of them in the wild, but they are probably like most wild animals, incredibly adept at survival, and fierce in a pinch. Wendy thought this should be the name of a rock band Fierce in a Pinch. We thankfully skipped the petting zoo and went off to cool down in a pub.

Who’s Responsible for Toxic Clean-Up?

This summer a decision was reached by the United States Supreme Court. This involves the recovery of the costs on the government, in regards to the environmental efforts to cleanup toxic spills when the various companies are found to have little or no responsibility, when they are found to be not at fault.

This stemmed from a case in Kern County, California, in the city of Arvin.  Any Los Angeles County or Orange County lawyer knows that this can have serious circumstances, especially for those counties that sit along the coastlines of the Pacific Ocean. This decision has served to expand the breadth of what was formally known to be the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act, and is now referred to simply as the Superfund Law.

This law limits which kind of company would be able to be held liable for any toxic contamination or chemical spills, and it governs which situations are those that a company would be held liable to carry the entire cost of any cleanup necessary following such a spill.  This has all stemmed from a chemical contamination that happened in Arvin, California.  The company is in the distribution industry.  The company had experienced ongoing leaks on their plant, and the company that sold them those chemicals was the Shell Oil Company

The distribution company has since claimed bankruptcy and gone out of business.   In this case it was not the Shell company that was directly responsible for the contamination, however under the Superfund Law, due to the fact that Shell knew that this was an ongoing problem and did nothing about it, that were to be held responsible.  One of the Supreme Court Justices claimed that since Shell was not directly responsible, the grounds for liability were insufficient.

While another of the Justices dissented, stating that when a company is aware of what is going on and does nothing about it for twenty years, that the cost of cleanup should be the responsibility of the Shell Oil Company and not the responsibility of the taxpayers.  For now, they are to be held partially financially responsible, unless the decision gets over turned once again.

Sydney Sights

We started at the Opera House because it just seems to magnetically draw you toward it plus it’s in every picture of Sydney anyone has ever seen and we were just awed by the architecture. As we hovered around the building taking snap shots (can you say that with a digital camera?) we kept noticing the Sidewalk cafe and popped in for some satay chicken and Thai salad with prawns and the obligatory glass of wine or two. the view here is extraordinary, and we could see Sydney Harbor and relaxed in on the terrace.

There’s a path we can walk to the ferry dock to Circular Quay over the Harbor Bridge which I found out has over six million rivets and opened in 1932. Ask at a hotel Sydney Australia furnishes on how to get there, but it’s easy. WE found out one can climb to the top. We like heights having been to the CN Tower in Toronto and other sights so we went for it. From up there we could see everything, especially many beaches (I found out there are over one hundred sixty beaches in Sydney, in case you were wondering.) Since I once had a Bondi Blue computer once, we decided to go to Bondi Beach. I the famous one you see on on video with sand of gold and lifeguards. Apparently there’s a bit of a rip tide and so I just decided to stay out of the water for this one until we came across the ocean swimming pool that’s set off from the wild water. I must say it was a delight to swim in the Southern Hemisphere. There’s a trail that runs along the cliffs and brings yo out to quiet bays. WE made it back and by then the waves had started to get big and I watched as the water knocked down more than a few swimmers who tried, who knows why, to head out to the ocean.

Yarmouth and Influences of Monarchy

Yarmouth, England is a beautiful coastal town located in the region of Norfolk. It has an incredibly interesting history, and some of the primary political aspects occurred during the reigns of both Queen Elizabeth and Charles II. These were also extremely compelling time periods in England’s overall history and the circumstances of their reigns and various social aspects involved are primary topics of history studies. While tourists staying in one of the beautiful Yarmouth hotels may not be concerned with the details of the late 16th and mid 17th centuries, these rulers were still essential in creating establishing the town as it exits today.

Queen Elizabeth is one of the most famous and well liked monarchs in British history. She ruled from 1558 until her death in 1603. She was the final reigning monarch of the Tudor line, whose most prominent member before her had been the notorious Henry VIII. The period of her reign is referred to as the Elizabethan era and coincided with the English Renaissance. This was an incredible period in English history and well remembered for the great playwrights and changes in theatrical structure that occurred. There were other major social elements that occurred during this time and one of them was the growing interests of the Puritans combined with the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants.

These dynamics contributed to a sense of instability, compounded by the fact that Elizabeth did not marry nor did she produce and heir, and increasing threat of assassination and transference of the crown. Many plots against the queen were uncovered, in part do to the relentless and often brutal tactics of Sir Francis Walsingham, sometimes referred to as her spy master. One of the famous plots against the queen is known as the Babbington Plot. The end of the 16th century is often referred to as the Golden Age of her reign. This was prompted by England’s unlikely defeat of the Spanish Armada when it attacked her shores. The seemingly dominated Brits were also at an armory disadvantage. Elizabeth went into to the soldier’s grounds to deliver a personal inspiration speech, which is believed to have had a tremendous impact on the soldiers.

Can’t sell your house, tips on successful home staging

So you can’t sell your house, don’t just blame it on the market, it could be the fact that your house is just… well too… you. And that is not a bad thing when you are living there, but if you are trying to sell it, it can really hurt your success. That is where home staging comes in.

Here are some ways you can make the most of your house that’s up for sale, so you can move on and make a whole new house completely your own.

Get rid of the clutter: Admit it; you have way too much stuff! And really, don’t we all. But stuff and clutter can really be distracting to home buyers. You need to have yourself a yard sale and stat. get rid of stuff! I know if can be really hard, but if you have not used it in a while, it’s time to give it up. And think about it this way, its way less you will end up having to move.

Get rid of furniture: Just like too much stuff can be detrimental to a home sale and so can too much furniture. Too much furniture in a home will make it appear smaller. People want to buy and live in homes that seem open and full of light. And yours might be both of those things; it’s just hidden behind all of those darn couches.

Upgrade: Whether it’s some new coats of paint or new blinds, your home might just need a minor upgrade. You don’t want anything in your house that screams a particular decade, so get rid of those grandma curtains. Consider some inexpensive window coverings from Next Day Blinds. And just like their name entails, Next Day Blinds will do them right and fast.

Have proper lighting: Lighting is key to making a home feel open. Make sure you have enough light in your house!

Oysters of Whitstable

Being famous for its oysters, Whitstable, England is known as the pearl of Kent. The harvesting of this seafood is celebrated by the annual oyster festival. Although, they are also available throughout the year and are served freshly in various local restaurants and pubs. Tourists staying in one of the Whitstable hotels are certain to come across them on the menu as they’re enjoying dinner, lunch or even a pub snack in a local dinning facility. This aspect of Whitstable has been around since the Roman times, and its reputation for great oysters only grows throughout the centuries.

Though this is not the only reason the city is popular with tourists, the oyster festival certainly draws in numerous visitors every year. It begins on the Saturday of every year that is closest to St. James’ Day, and lasts for nine days. The first day there is a large parade that is intended to celebrate the official landing of the catch. This is followed by a procession of oysters, that’s right, oysters, in a horse drawn carriage tray and they proceed through the town delivering the oysters to various restaurants and other venues.

Other major festivals are celebrated in Whitstable, and most of them are traditionally based. Celebrations of various aspects of history are common and accentuate the nature of this ancient area. May Day is celebrated with the traditional Jack in the Green parade, and parades are common to many of the festivals, holidays and event celebrations. In addition, there are museums and arts venues that provide interesting displays and also great performances. Whatever the reason a family decides to visit this area of England, they will certainly be entertained and engaged throughout their stay. Not to mention, they will get to enjoy some of the best seafood they will find anywhere.

One of the most important pieces of information from the fan guides for day to day fans is to not bring a bag! You can get through security much faster if you do not have a bag because all bags will be checked. And there are no backpacks of any kind allowed in the event anyways. So make your life a lot easier and leave your bag at home.

The Tregothnan Estate, Honiton UK

The botanical gardens located on the grounds of the Tregothnan Estate in Honiton, have been the center of the estate, the heartbeat if you will since 1335.  This estate has been the home to the same family since that time, and for anyone visiting the region and staying in one of the Honiton hotels,  this is a site that must be experienced first hand.  The estate has remained dedicated over the last six hundred plus years to the cultivation and the care of the gardens.  And the focus on doing things right, doing things well has been a family tradition for hundreds of years.

As with many who design and care for botanical gardens throughout the world, the Tregothnan is focused and passionate about the collection of a wide variety of species and the growing and tending of those species.  Many of the specimens are rare and reflect the passion and the experiences through the products that are produced on site, such as the vast array of tea plants as well as the production of Manuka Honey.  The production of such food products is just one of the aspects of agriculture and botany in which the estate takes part and interest.

The florist section was the first in the United Kingdom to have gained the certification for organic farming known as the Soil Association.  When the general public became aware of the status, and more interested in the benefits of organic farming, the Estate became inundated with calls, people ordering edible flowers and bouquets.  The Estate had been practicing in such a sustainable manner for many years, and so they were ready to apply their principles to the techniques and the demands of the modern world.  They now have a wide range of products and plants that are certifiably organic, making this the largest nursery of its kind, throughout the entire world.

Choosing the best company for the job online can be misleading

Anything you buy these days it’s wise to do a little research. See what people are really saying about the new Iphone or if that digital camera you are looking into really is worth the price or is it just because of the special color. The internet has created a way for people to communicate about what they buy and has really done an amazing job for empowering consumers. It’s consumers helping out consumers and in the past that was only done by Good Housekeeping or Consumer Reports magazine.

As amazing as the internet is for information it also does have its setbacks that can really clutter up the online space and muddy reputation of businesses and individuals quickly. And it can happen regardless of your business. Would you imagine that the business of custom window coverings is cut throat? Yeah me either, but it is. And if the competition for Next Day Blinds decides it’s cool and is going to file complaints against that company it can hurt the company in the online space.  Filing a complaint might trigger Next Day Blinds complaints to show up in a search engine and cause people to click on it. That key word Next Day Blinds complaints can be very misleading to customers. Clicking on Next Day Blinds complaints could lead to someone having a false impression of the company that was created out of thin air really.

You really need to be aware of how easily this could happen when you are choosing a company or individual to do any kind of home repair for you. It can be so confusing trying to navigate the online space for this. Make sure you are getting reviews that are not anonymous, check out Angie’s List; it’s a great place to find unbiased information that is from actual people.

Shakespeare in Cambridge

I thought while I was visiting a friend who was attending the University of Cambridge, that I would audition for the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival. I’ve been in a few Shakespeare plays while I was in highschool and I wondered if I have what it takes to be a Shakespearean actor. But, first I thought I’d check out some performances during the Festival, to see if I really might have a chance.

The Festival has become a significantly cultural event here in Cambridge. I can expect a crowd upwards of 25,000 people coming for the productions which will run eight week long. Since the city naturally attracts people here, the Festival has benefited and has acquired not only a national dimension, but an international one too. That can be a little intimidating, for one who thinks they can perform in a Shakespeare play, like me.

My evening at the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival was a unique experience for me. Prior the the performance, members of the audience are allowed to picnic in the idyllic setting. I didn’t know that, but I sat back anyway to enjoy an evening of a very dynamic a visual theater experience. I read in the program that the artistic policy of the Festival strips away unnecessary theatrical artifice and gimmickry. The Company exist only to provide access for all to marvel at the works without assuming any prior knowledge of the author or the play being performed that night. This I found intimidating too. No gimmickry?

I was really impress with the elegant amphitheater of Robinson College. It was an ideal setting for Shakespeare’s fast paced comedy-tragedy and masquerades. As I left the theater and headed back to my Cambridge Hotel, I knew I didn’t stand a chance if I auditioned for next years Festival. These actors were so fabulously good. So believable. I loved every minute of it. But, I wasn’t disappointed with myself, instead I was glad to know there was such marvellous talent out in the world.

Kirkwall, Scotland

The city of Kirkwall has been the center of the world for the United Kingdom.  For much of history, this town has been the heartbeat of the region, the Scottish location that linked the Shetlands and the Western Isles with Argyll, Iceland and Scandinavia.  In fact, aspects of the town, the culture, the cafes and the Kirkwall Hotels seem to some to be more of a Scandinavian origin and flavor, than a Scottish one.  And throughout most of history, it actually was. Kirkwall has long been a center for markets and farming, and during the 1,100′s work on the construction of the Saint Magnus Cathedral began.  Magnus Eunson was the British version of Al Capone, smuggling whiskey and spirits.  Though Al Capone never went ‘legit’ as Eunson did by 1825.  His entire operations became legalized by the Highland Park distillery, located in the North of Scotland.   This area continues to thrive to this day, and is a popular spot for tourists that overlooks the incredible Bay of Scapa.

Improvements made to the harbor in 1811, are still reflected in the region today.  Be it cruise vessels or those importing and exporting, the harbor provides economic stability to all those living and working in the community.  The Orkney Isles conduct business along the shores and in the harbor, in fact ships depart each and every day heading to Stronsay, Westray, and Sanday from the piers and the ports of this lovely town.  Should a tourist that remains bent on a shopping excursion, Kirkwall is the place.  Close to Albert Street and Bridge, there are many shops and boutiques located within the narrow and charming windings through the architecture, medieval designs at their best.  It is wise for pedestrians to be aware when wondering throughout the neighborhood, as the drivers can be a bitdodgey in their maneuvers…and not many traffic-related laws are enforced.  It’s an ‘each for his/her own’ experience, and one that should not be missed.

Wandering Birmingham

There was so much to do all over Birmingham, my family and I didn’t know where to start first. But, it was our family holiday, so we wanted to fit in as much as possible. We book the same Birmingham Hotel we book every year, because, after going there for five years, the staff knows us by name, and they tell us they really enjoy watching my children grow up. Surprised? Don’t be, Birmingham is full of great people who care.

This year we decided to check out and explore Birmingham’s spectacular landscape, go to the beach of course and then walk through the hills and dales. First we went to the hire-wire forest adventure named aptly, Go Ape , just outside of the city. My kids never laughed so much, and I never worried so much, but at the same time, I had just as much fun as my kids. Then the next day we were off to reliving the 1066 battle of Hastings. It was well organized and they managed to not only entertain my children, but they educated them at the same time. My kids didn’t feel one bit that they were in class getting a history lesson. I really recommend that all of history be taught this way; my children still remember all the details of the battle and why it happened. Ask them about any other history, and they just shrug their shoulders.

Then for the rest of our stay, we beached it. Besides swimming in the ocean, we spent time hunting for crabs in the many rock-pools, building sand castles, burying each other in the sand and eating the picnic lunch the hotel would prepare for us. A week really isn’t enough, but, anytime I get to spend fun time with my kids, is the best time. I know they feel the same, just seeing them smile when their heads hit the pillow for the night, tells the whole story.

Brixham Orange Queen

Sunday morning we drove through Torquay, right past several caravan sites and past houses called ‘Montana’ in Paignton. We arrived in Brixham were we had reservation at one of the Brixham Hotels. We were excited, because we were not too far from Riviera country. We didn’t bother to unpack, we wanted to take a walk to the port which wasn’t too far from our hotel.

We watched fresh catches being unloaded from the boats and then even before the fish barely stopped wriggling, they were thrown on top of the charcoal grill which my friend and I were sitting in front of at the counter of one of the many shacks strewn along the shore. After delighting in eating the freshest grilled fish we’ve ever had, we walked up a winding road called Station Hill. We were surrounded on both sides by window boxes which really let us know we were in a very Provencal town.

William of Orange landed here in Brixham on his way to claim the throne. There’s even a placard pointing out where William of Orange fell off his boat and broke his nose. My friend, who is a scholar, begged to differ, saying it’s just a tourist gig, and it’s not true that the Dutchman fell and broke his nose.  Despite if the story is true or not, I really liked just how underdeveloped Brixham is. It didn’t feel like a tourist trap or a tourist destination. We later, found a place to have lunch before we checked out ‘Art in Action,’ a place where we could, if we wanted to chisel away at a stone piece. We passed up on the offer.

That evening we watched The Bohemians play at the Aquaculture Festival. A leaflet which was distributed boasts that The Bohemians are the only Queen tribute band that really resembles the actual members of the four Queen members. We didn’t know what the Queen members looked like, so we can’t tell you if that is true, but we did enjoy them all the same. We called it a early evening and went back to our hotel room to get some much needed rest before the next days drive.

New York Jets Broadway Joe

The New York Jets are an American football team that is based in the New York metropolitan area. They are extremely popular locally and also have national fans who may or may not center their favorites on their local team. Sports tickets to their games are often considered to be great gifts, and they have a high fan turn out every time they play. They are part of the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference and play their home games at Giant Stadium, which is located across the river in Florham Park, New Jersey. The stadium was named after the other NFL team that plays there, the New York Giants.

The Jets were founded in 1960 as the New York Titans. They were formed as a charter member of the AFL. In 1963 Andreas J. Grosser bought the team and renamed them the Jets. They have the unique distinction of being the only team to defeat an NFL team in a Super Bowl, which occurred in Bowl III against the Baltimore Colts. The team had a shaky beginning and had difficulty attracting crowds to their home playing field at Polo Grounds. This partially represents the incredible journey the team has experienced on their route to become the major team they are today, with such a strong amount of popular support.

One of the main reasons for the rise in their popularity and overall recognition and support was the arrival of Joe Namath. He joined the team in 1967 and quickly led the Jets to experience their best seasonal record, which at the time was eight wins, five losses and one tie. Affectionately nicknamed Broadway Joe, the quarterback quickly rose the level of social respect for the team and became a sports star. By 1968 he had led the team to a thrilling defeat of the Oakland Raiders in the AFL Championship Game. This was the same season that they would go on to defeat the Colts in the Super Bowl, which was considered to be a great upset.

New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter

The New York Yankees are one of the most popular, and also one of the most despised baseball teams in the country. The popularity is due to their outstanding team, and the strength and competitive force they’ve been throughout their history. They have an enormous and loyal fan base. Their strength and solid record is also the reason they are not liked by many people who favor an opposing team. They strong history and record make them a threat to any team in any game. Sports tickets to their games are popular commodities and quick sells in New York.
The Yankees have many players that are local and national celebrities. This often occurs in various sports teams that themselves standout, and have star players who achieve national recognition and fame. They become mainstream icons, in addition to their great efforts on the field. Derek Jeter is one of these figures and a major player for the Yankees. He is an amazing shortstop, hitter and also the team captain. His statistics through 2008 places him as the 5th highest in lifetime batting averages throughout the history of all active baseball players.

Jeter was born in 1974 in Pequannock, New Jersey. It is interesting that as a child he would spend his summers with his grandparents who would take him and his sister to the Yankees’ games. This contributed greatly to his love of the game and also established the Yankees as his favorite team. He showed an early talent for baseball and by the time he was in high school he was already recognized as a star player. In 2003 he was inducted into his school’s, The Kalamazoo Central High, Athletic Hall of Fame. He has since received great honors, recognition and fame. He became the only player to win both the All-Star Game MVP and the World Series MVP in the same year in 2000.

Best Rock Concert Tickets

Attending a rock concert at Deer Lake Park is my favorite summer evening past-time. The Best Rock Concert Tickets I purchased at the park was for Feist. She absolutely blew me away. The Deer Lake Park itself is a magnificent venue for just that type of band. It’s a stunning outdoor venue unlike any other outdoor venue. But, it’s really hard to get to, it’s located in the middle of nowhere. A place called Burnaby.

Most out door venues that I’ve been too only offer flat fields to view the band, but here at Deer Lake, the stage is at the bottom of a hill, so no matter where I put my blanket, I have an excellent view of the stage. The backdrop for the venue is a lake and if the concerts being performed during the right time of the month, you can watch the sunset as the full moon rises behind the stage. How magical is that?

The venue, though, can’t handle when a crowd arrives all at once. I missed the opening act because all 8000 people showed up at the same time. We were wrapped around the outside numerous times in a zig-zag pattern, kind of like the long lines a Disney Land. But, once inside, I had a good amount of time to find a good place to put my blanket down and relax before Feist began to play. And boy, was her performance well worth missing the opening act. She came on stage with her guitar in hand, a cute little dress and began to sing from her ‘Let it Die’ album. The crowd roared and I was in heaven. A highlight for me though, was a little side show of shadows that played on the backdrop. During each song Feist sang, a shadow story would be performed by her assistant using her hands, some cut-outs, flowers, branches and a few other props. What a get way to not show videos, but to bring back memories of childhood with the shadow stories. I wanted to stay there all night and just be transported away to Feist’s world and stay there for an eternity.

Movie Theater Tickets for Opera

I’m an opera fan and a very passionate opera fan. But, just the other day I was treated to High-Definition simulcast to ‘Salome,’ by Strauss. Yes, a high-definition simulcast. A good friend of mine invited me saying he had Theater Tickets to the opera and would I like to join him. Naturally, I accepted. But, I was surprised that I met him at a movie theater. I was stunned to say the least.

Apparently, opera simulcasts in movie theaters seems to be very popular. I day we went, the movie theater was full, sold out. I was truly intrigued and felt like I was a part of a high-tech cultural happening, instead of being a part of the social elite. I was really pleased with the simulcast too. Currently, there are two opera companies that are participating in this live performance: The Opera Boston and the Boston Lyric Opera.  But now, I’ve heard, that the Met is on line, which thrills me to no end. I now don’t have to fly into New York to see a certain opera, I can now, see which of my local movie theaters in Boston will be doing the simulcast.

I’m a converted ‘live’ opera audience member and now consider myself an opera movie goer. It’s so much more comfortable, saves me money, and if I choose, I can sneak in some takeout Chinese food. I do wonder if the opera’s will be able to keep up the simulcasts, because they will be losing season ticket holders. I found out that the Boston theater showing the opera simulcast are seven and sold about 21,000 tickets, but comparison, the entire attendance for all the 18 opera’s performed on the main-stage was 24,000. But, my worries seem to have no bearing. The opera houses do not simulcast every production. So, for now, I’ll keep my good standing season tickets, and build up a taste for popcorn.

Concert Tickets to JT

I won 2 Concert Tickets through this local radio station I listen to for the Justin Timberlake tour. His first tour in three years! I was so thrilled, this will be my first time to get to see him live. I’ve watched his career forever.  He’s grown so much as an artist, I mean he writes his own songs, sings them and plays his own instruments. I mean, really! Now, all I had to do was pick which friend to go with me. Not a difficult choice, really, my best friend of course!

It took us forever to figure out what to wear to the concert, we were so nervous, but once we arrived, we completely forgot about how we looked. We were so enthralled and ga-ga over Justin. One of the highlights was when he took on the piano and began to serenade the crowd. Then he did a sexy dance with two girls dressed in some kind of burlesque outfit. Justin played for two hours, non-stop. He was so hot.

For me, the best part of the show was when Timbaland joined Justin on stage. It was so fantastic. I felt like I was in a club instead of an arena. Those two mixed music like Michael Jackson, Jay Z, Nelly Furtado, Kelly Clarkson and then they did a tribute to Aliyah. What was even more fantastic was while Timbaland and Justin were mixing Nelly’s ‘Say It Right’, I spotted her right next to us! Nelly was all by herself, well she had a bodyguard with her, but she was dancing to the music. I almost died, she was so nice. She even told me a little bit about her new album.

The concert was totally insane. I couldn’t believe I actually got to see JT perform live and what an amazing performer he is, there aren’t enough words to describe just how fantastic he is. I really, really recommend, if Justin Timberlake comes to your city, no matter what, you need to see him perform live. He’s a true performer and so professional. I would’ve never have dreamed this chance. But, I really did get to see him live. Wow.

Regulations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

Under the provisions outlined by the 1977 Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, foreign businesses and nationals are defined as all the individuals and the entities that are not under the category of domestic concerns or issuers.  These companies and individuals are held to the federal laws and regulations outlined by the FCPA regarding corruption and acts of bribery committed with any United States business or involving any member of the United States government.  This includes agents, officers, or stockholders that are acting on behalf of the companies.  They are held just as liable as those involved in acts of corruption within the United States.

Similarly, any corporation or company is also held liable for the actions of their officers, managers and employees.  This is one of the reasons why the practice of due diligence is so important.  One must be certain of the reliability and the ethical sense of those one allows into their lives and into their businesses, as the consequences of criminal activities will have a direct effect, whether one was personally involved in the act or not. Ignorance is no defense when it comes to federal charges of bribery and corruption.  Bribery is defined as payment, in any form, that is not for services rendered or that appears to greatly exceed the ordinary means of the services.

Payment is defined by the provisions outlined in the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act as the offer to pay, the promise to pay, the giving of or the promise of a gift, anything of value that is promised or given in exchange for transactions and services.  The value of such gifts is loosely defined and encompasses any non-cash exchanges.  This could include the purchase of meals and/or entertainment excursions, tax breaks and benefits, the exchange of information and the promises of such things as scholarships and continued or future opportunities involving employment.

The Importance of Regulatory Compliance in Regards to Confidentiality

The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 requires that regulatory compliance terms be followed in regards to the personal information of the customers of any give financial institution, and the protection of that information.  Insurance companies, banks, lending firms and credit counselors are among those in the business of providing financial services, and they are required by law to protect the data in their records and to enact implementations as needed that address the variety of and the access to the security measures that must be taken in order to ensure that information is protected.  The confidentiality and the integrity of the information and the records of each customer is the main concern of the act.

These aspects that are to remain confidential are the customer’s account numbers, their social security number, and their name and address.  Also covered under the protection is any additional information that is required to filled out on an application to open an account.  During all the phases of the lifetime of the account, these objectives must be kept in the minds of the employees and officers of the financial institutions, in order ensure that nothing is missed.  This may mean that over the course of time, various steps will be necessary to take regarding the testing and the implementation of the means of the deployment, or the modes of standard operational procedures.

It is important that compliance standards are met, as this will serve to protect the customer’s personal information from access by parties unauthorized to gait that access.  Records must be properly encrypted and that they encryption processes are regularly alternated.  The systems should be such that if necessary, they can be altered quickly and at a minimal expense.  Libraries and programs for such encryption should not be used as their are well known and easy to break into.  Those that are interested in breaking those codes have too many opportunities to learn how best to break them if they are standardized forms.  Understanding the policies of regulatory compliance can be frustrating, but is important to the customer and to the integrity of the financial institution.

The Combined Effort Against Terrorist Funding

Operation Green Quest has worked along side other governmental agencies over the last eight years, upholding the rules and the regulations set out by the U.S. Patriot Act.  Hundreds of investigations have been ongoing since the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, and have resulted in the seizure of millions of dollars laundered by terrorist cells, many arrests and indictments all relating to the activities of the financing of terrorist activities.  This organization was created in October of 2001 by the U.S Treasury Departments.  This is a law enforcement agency that combines the efforts of others in the United States as well as those agencies located in other countries.  It was created to enhance the efforts of anti-terrorism and brings the entire scope of the expertise of the various governmental agencies together to attack the individuals and the organizations that provide the means and the funding for terrorist activities.  Accounts are frozen, assets are seized and legal actions are taken against those organizations and individuals committing such crimes.

The U.S. Customs service leads the OGQ, and delegates analysts and agents from other agencies including the IRS, the ATF, the FBI and even the United States Postal Service.  The center for the organization is located in the United States capital of Washington, D.C.  The headquarters is also staffed with those members of the other agencies.  This is where most of the information is collected, managed, and disseminated to the agents in the field throughout the country.  This is where all the information is organized in order to ensure that one agency is not spending time working on the investigations and projects already in progress by one of the other agencies.  Since its inception, the Operation Green Quest has had an existing field unit in Manhattan.  This unit is made of investigators with experience in financial transactions and institutions.  This is the El Dorado Force.  More than two hundred and sixty agents of the IRS and the U.S. Customs office comprise one of the most successful task forces and one of America’s largest.  Seasoned analysts, regulators and special agents all working under one roof to ensure that what happened in 2001 will not happen again.
