The Care, and the Benefits, of Hot Tubs

There are certain considerations to the care of hot tubs, such as maintaining temperatures and the cleaning process.  Once a cover is removed and the jets are turned on, should they be forced-air jets, the temperature of the water will begin to decrease at a fairly rapid rate.  Should one wish to cool the temperature, one may add cooler water.  The more people join in the tub, the more the water will cool.  In response one may want to raise the temperature on the thermostat to counter act this.  Perhaps even adjusting the temperature ahead of time, as once the water cools, it will a bit of time for it to heat up again.  Many varieties of tubs with various modes of thermostat control are found at choosehottubsdirect.com.  Not only will the right hot tub for ones needs be found here, but also the many other appliances and items that make ones ownership of the spas more enjoyable.

It is important that one keeps the water in their hot tub clean.  Warm water will promote the growth of bacteria faster than the cool water of a swimming pool, so care must be taken to add the necessary chemicals and agents to the water.  Most of the species found in the tubs is not fatal, but they have been known to be responsible for various rashes on the skin.  Also, from time to time, it is best to just change the water completely.  All this aside, owning a hot tub is a wonderful experience, the health benefits and the relaxing social situations that occur are well worth the time and the energy it takes to maintain the spa.

One of the results of soaking in the hot water is that the blood vessels will dilate and the blood pressure will lower.  And consequently, circulation will increase, which leaves one with the feeling of rejuvenation after a long hard day at the office, or the many hours of transporting kids from one activity to another.   The buoyancy one feels while in large bodies of water, not only feels wonderful, but is wonderful for the physical body.  Pressure is removed from the joints and the spinal column, relieving tension and relieving the work load of the heart, believe it or not.  And while soaking at night serves to relax one and get them ready for a night of sweet dreams and peaceful sleep, soaking in the morning will have the effect of revitalization and energy necessary for the start of the day.

Grilling vs. Barbecue-ing

There’s no doubt that built in gas grills offer some extraordinary features that will help you to master the art of cooking.  You’ll certainly be the envy of the neighborhood, and the opportunities for outdoor parties just got much more interesting.  You’ll want to start experimenting right away, and as the results get more and more precise, the more you’ll want to keep trying new things.  There’s no end to the combination of flavors and textures, and like anything worth learning, there’s always more to know.

There are lots of grilling techniques and hints that you already know, and many more that you’ll come across.  It’s worth investigating all the differing opinions on the best way to do things, with certain cuts of meat and certain types of preparation.  One of the outdoor kitchen topics that often brings up a lot of interesting contention is the issue of barbecue-ing vs. grilling.  There are some who say that there isn’t a big difference, but really, there is, and it’s pretty simple.  Grilling means preparing cuts of meat by cooking on high heat, directly, for short periods.  Barbecue (or barbeque, or bb-q, etc.) means slow cooking over indirect heat, where the fire passes through wood.  Wood has to be involved somewhere, or it’s not barbecue, because it refers to the taste in the smoke.

With this said, it’s certainly possible to escape the debate between barbecue and grill and slow cook meat on your grill, and give it a taste that is very similar to barbecue.  Your grill is extremely versatile, and a barbecue by definition is not.  The best barbecue, after all, is a hole in the ground that’s dug for one occasion.  There are ways of flavoring meat while it’s cooking that can give you the taste you’re looking for, and ways of experimenting with these tastes.  The easiest way, of course, being to simply add barbecue sauce.  If that’s the rather obvious technique, then be sure to add the sauce at the very end, since sugar tends to burn.  However you cook it, though, you’ll soon find yourself enjoying the preparation as much as the consumption.

The Inexpensive Portable Spa

Many have the misconception that the addition of a portable spa to their home, may serve to drastically increase electric or gas bills.  It is a conundrum of the economic times. Should one install a spa in their home, which will serve to provide hours of relaxation and the reduction of stress…or would the addition of that spa create more stress due to rising prices of services such as natural gas heating or electricity?  The usage of power required to heat a spa, is low.  And any size heater will serve to heat the portable spa efficiently, of course the larger the heater, the hotter the water.  But most are built with the capacity to provide the desired temperature to wash away stress and relax the muscles.  With portable spas, any heating system will suffice, however if one decides to install and in-ground spa, the heater is considered separately.  Spas that are installed in-ground are considered in the industry as, additions wherein customized design is intrinsic.  If the spa requires the installation of a gas heater, the initial cost will be greater, but in the long run will serve to save money on the monthly bills.

Once one decides on the model of spa that best fits their homes and lifestyles, one will find that there are many options, be it the choice to install one in the ground or structure of their home, and the choice of the many different shapes and designs and sizes.  It is best to try these out in the stores, as some spas offer seating that is contoured and allows one to stretch out. Each body is different, and as such, each spa is different as well.   Some spas are even equipped with lights, of which one can switch out the gel covers or the light bulb colors to add to the mood and the atmosphere.  Some people do not consider this option when first purchasing their spa, which means that when they do decide later to add the light, it could mean additional costs.  It is best to consider this before the installation process is complete.  When ordering a spa, one has the option of choosing where the jets are as well.  Affecting the angles and the direction of the water to best relax those areas of the body that require the most attention.   Which ever model one chooses, a home spa is a relatively inexpensive way to retreat from the daily grind on a nightly basis.

Spooky BBQ

During the mid 80′s a group of us planned an outdoor BBQ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbecue because we were tired of using the BBQ Islands at our complex in the city. It would take us until midnight to reach the hill top destination for the BBQ. During those days all the lamp posts would automatically switch off at midnight. So, at first we wanted to use a short-cut through an old abandoned warehouse, but since it was too dark and without any external lighting we had to take the longer route which cut through a park going down a long steps leading to the middle of the park facing the sea.

When we arrived, we had to use the BBQ pit in the center of the park because the one nearest to the public restrooms was already occupied and was really too far away. As some of us started preparing the pit for the fire, a few of us, including myself, took a pails to the public restroom to fill them up with water. Along the way, we could see the other people at the restroom BBQ pit, barbecuing away, however, it got pretty smoky after we filled up our pails with water on our way back to our BBQ pit. The people disappeared. They were gone, nowhere in site. It only took us about 8 minutes to fill the pails inside the public restroom, so how could they possibly vacate so quickly, leaving without a trace?

We inspected the pit, but there was no sign of any BBQ activity, no burning embers of charcoal, nothing, not even traces of water being poured over the coals to put them out. The trash container next to the pit was empty too. We were perplexed. How could anybody clear up and out within 8 minutes? And really, how many people bother to clear up the pit especially if the charcoal is still alive?

We continued our BBQ though without incident or any other strange occurrence and heading back home after it took us almost an hour to clear out the pit and clean up our area. We are all still puzzled, even today, about that night out in the park were 4 of us witnessed the complete disappearance of our next door Barbequers.

How to take care of a spa

If you have taken the plunge and finally decided to get yourself a spa, you need to realize that just like making an impromptu puppy purchase; a spa is something that you need to take care of. Well, at least it won’t use your house as a toilet, so perhaps it’s less like a puppy.

Buying a spa requires spa maintenance and sometimes a lot of it. It can sometimes feel like a full time job to keep the algae at bay and the Ph levels correct. But as long as you know what needs to be done, it’s fairly easy to maintain your spa. First off, find a pool supply store in your area and make friends with one of the employees, because you are bound to have about a million questions. But here are some of the basics.

The first things you will need are test strips. Test strips, if you have them you really have no excuse not using them. You really can’t tell what your spa needs just by looking at it. It may look perfectly fine, but it may need a ton of work. Make sure you have enough sanitizer in your spa and that ph levels are correct. All you have to do with a test strip is dip it in the water and compare colors to a color chart that is provided.

You have to sanitize as well to keep algae away! You don’t want you and your guests getting into a pool of viruses now do you? Didn’t think so. The optimal spa ph should be around 7.5. That is a neutral ph.

If you think you are up for the responsibility you should try out a site created by Steve Barbarich, choosehottubsdirect.com. They have a bunch of luxury hot tubs and Jacuzzis and excellent customer service, happy hot tubing!

More Than Half of First Time Users Start With Marijuana

Results from the NSDUH: National Findings, SAMHSA, OAS that introduction to drugs for teenagers usually starts with marijuana.

The report finds:

* In 2007, an estimated 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older used an illicit drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to more than 7,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2006 (2.8 million). Three fifths of initiates (60.1 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and 54.1 percent of new users were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 18.0 years.

* In 2007, of the 2.7 million persons aged 12 or older who used illicit drugs for the first time within the past 12 months, a majority reported that their first drug was marijuana (56.2 percent). Nearly one third initiated with psychotherapeutics (30.6 percent, including 19.0 percent with pain relievers, 6.5 percent with tranquilizers, 4.1 percent with stimulants, and 1.1 percent with sedatives). A sizable proportion reported inhalants (10.7 percent) as their first drug, and a small proportion used hallucinogens as their first illicit drug (2.0 percent). The percentage of past year illicit drug initiates whose first drug was tranquilizers increased from 2.4 percent in 2002 to 6.5 percent in 2007, while the percentage whose first drug was Ecstasy decreased from 1.9 percent in 2002 to 0.6 percent in 2007.

Comparison by drug:

* The specific drug categories with the largest number of recent initiates among persons aged 12 or older were nonmedical use of pain relievers (2.1 million) and marijuana use (2.1 million), followed by nonmedical use of tranquilizers (1.2 million), cocaine (0.9 million), Ecstasy (0.8 million), inhalants (0.8 million), and stimulants (0.6 million).

* Among persons aged 12 to 49, the average age at first use of inhalants in 2007 was 17.1 years; it was 17.6 years for marijuana, 20.2 years for cocaine, 20.2 years for Ecstasy, 21.2 years for pain relievers, and 24.5 years for tranquilizers.

Many experts agree that for parents and teachers who deal with teenagers on a daily basis, knowledge is the power in identifying a child that has a problem with alcohol and drug use. These studies help to show trends and empower people who are thinking about enrolling a teenager into a teen drug rehab or long term drug rehab program. There are lots of ways to seek help for drug rehabilitation.

Shopping and Sight Seeing on Pagoda Street in Singapore

The streets of metropolitan cities offer a culture that is best absorbed, by walking those streets. Some city streets are more ‘walk-able’ than others, some cities have very few and other towns are known for the pedestrian traffic. This has to do with what a city has to offer. In Singapore, hotels of various stylistic elements and eras of design are nestled up next to artist shops and open air markets. One may find food in any number of restaurants, or one may be invited into someones house. A someone they have never met. That is an aspect of the all inclusive nature of a city that is comprised of many different immigrants lending their heritage to the charm of one single location. Pagoda Street in Singapore is one such location. One may walk into a store and buy a vintage Malaysian scarf, and then go next door only to find the most modern works of controversial photography hanging on the walls of the Red Dot Design Museum. Replicas are on display at the heritage center, of life…the way it was. And then one can walk a few feet to the nearest Starbucks, grab a latte and experience life as it is now.

One may pass a trendy night club on Pagoda, and hear the most modern of Malaysian techno music. Walk a bit more to the corner and there may be a woman selling egg-tarts and moon-cakes. Then one arrives at the end of the street, at the Sri Mariamman Temple, at just the right moment to hear the trumpets of the temple sounding. The tower in front of the Temple is made up of many, many colorful human figures, the divine beings surrounding the spire are visible from the other end of the city street. In the mornings, should one pass by the Temple, services are being given and the sounds of worshippers chanting and making offerings is music that is foreign, and exquisite, especially for Western ears. Another temple located on Pagoda Street is the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, which is also a museum. This is an ornately designed structure, the largest monument honoring Buddha throughout Asia. This is a sculpture, poured in the casting process with four hundred and twenty kilograms, of the purest gold, inlayed with 201 rubies and then surrounded by thirty five smaller statues of Buddha. Pagoda Street in Singapore is a feast for the eyes, and will leave one with visual imprints and memories for the rest of their lives.

Paintings and Painters of Thailand

The mural paintings in Thailand are characteristically Asian, ignoring perspective and focusing on composition and line, and for many years appeared as only design and decoration in the temples, palaces and Thailand luxury hotels. Or in smaller venues, as book illustrations. The figures in a scene of a Thai painting varied in size depending on the their significance and importance. The negative space was not given much importance and remained neutral in tone and color, with two dimensional figures painted atop. Throughout the years they have enhanced many walls in the country, with religious images and royal stories.

Painters of Thailand murals were restricted for many years, to just the use of five colors, white, black, red, ultra-marine and yellow ochre. They did blend the colors in order to find more range, and bound the pigments with glue. With just those five colors they managed to paint brilliantly colored banners, murals and illustrations. Of the older murals that have survived on city walls, those in Bangkok and Thon Buri remain well preserved. Over the years, various paints were imported from China, and the chemical additions to the tubes served to increase the number of colors and values, and to bring a richness and a vibrancy to the works.

Thai painters have adapted technologically speaking, and have adopted many tools used by Western artists, still keeping the traditional set of values from which they paint from. Many of the works have transformed from simple story illustrations into significant works of art. One artist that combined traditional modes with modern techniques successfully was the well known Thai portrait painter, Chakrapan Posayakrit. Another painter who experimented with the fusion of the traditional and modern ‘way’, is Tawan Dachanee. Both managed to create their own styles, in the midst of conformity. The paintings have gradually moved from being only illustrations for religious stories, decorating the walls in honor of the royal and religious aesthetics, to art for art’s sake. For the beauty of the work.

Johan Thom, South African Performance Artist

An important part of an elegant trip is the automobile, and car hire in South Africa is made easy and comfortable. Mobility in this country is necessary and makes for exciting adventures that are simply impossible on foot. There are enormous natural resources worth exploring, and an incredible night life in every town, and all of these add up to a memorable experience. The richness of the land is reflected in the people. With a deeply troubled history, recent years have seen some incredible changes that make for a society in flux, which always makes for a fascinating visit.

For the traveler on the lookout for some interesting local culture that might be off the beaten path, the work of local performance artist Johan Thom. His work is incredibly challenging in content and in form, and he mines the sensibilities of South African consciousness to make an art that is a series of questions and potential liberations.

Having graduated from the University of Pretoria in 1999, he is now a full-time artist and lectures part-time at Tswhane University of Technology in sculpture, interdisciplinary studies, and in theory of art and design. The work of Johan Thom has travelled all over, in South Africa and beyond, and he has won many awards. He was also a participant in the Venice Biennale in 2003, and has very interesting works posted on youtube, thomjohan’s channel. The work is very provocative, and he uses his body to create works of immediacy and intensity. It is also extremely focuses on spectacle, with stunning images and vibrantly theatrical visual metaphors. He asks fascinating questions in his performance work as well as in interviews and formal discussions, and is an artist who is constantly looking at the border between self and community. Certainly he is one to watch in the coming years, for his amazing installation work, which seems to reflect the changes in South Africa’s sense of selves.

Biking Formentera

Part of the amazing charm of Formentera is the fact that this small island has no airport. Tourist fly into Ibiza airport and make their way to the harbour in Ibiza Town to catch one of the handful of ferries headed to this island. Once there a taxi will take you to any of the Hotels Formentera. Not many tourist go to Formentera because of it’s small size and usually only book Formentera as a daytrip.

Walking or biking around the islands excellent cycle paths emphasizes the most popular from of transportation. Both visitors and inhabitants find progress to happen slowly on the island. The ground is not very easy to cultivate and is prone to erosion by the winds comes off the oceans and fiercely sweep the landscape during the winter months. Plus, the absense of a natural port has prevented the development of a healthy fishing industry. Thanks to the meager production of agriculture and salt mines keeps tourism to remain small.

Make a note that some of Formentera’s beaches are ‘Clothes Optional‘ but the main beaches are strictly swimwear. There are many wonderfully beautiful beaches and the best way to reach this is to hire a bike. You can bike until you find your own private beach and spend the whole day there without seeing another soul. Or if you prefer a more populated beach that will never be crowded but will always be interesting. There’s a lagoon where the buoyancy in the water is incredible. You’ll find it hard to keep your feet on the ground and the sand is golden with hardly any rocks or pebbles. You can easily bike around the island in a day and returning more fit and feeling ready for more, just remember to take a backpack packed with your swim suit, a snack and bottle water.

Orchard Street Singapore

Singapore is a vibrant city and is full of major historic landmarks as well as contemporary entertainment and dinning opportunities. Tourists who come to this city-state and stay in one of the best Singapore hotels are often times attracted to the shopping opportunities as well as the cultural and entertainment aspects. The Orchard Street area is one of the most popular sections of Singapore and attracts hundreds of residents and tourists daily.

Orchard Street is commonly considered to be the main retail, and even entertainment, hub of the city-state. It encompasses the major business district in the central region. This extends into the surrounding area, which is known as the Orchard, though it takes its name from the prominent historic street. Orchard Street itself is named after the many fruit, nutmeg and pepper orchards that lined it during the early 1800s. The major economic development, for which it is now known, occurred predominately in the 1970s. One of its major landmarks is the Orchard Hotel, which is a prime place for shopping oriented visitors to stay. The Istana building, located at the southern end of Orchard, is probably the most elegant of those lining the street.

Every year during the Christmas season, the street is lined with a beautiful light display. This makes the already vibrant and beautiful area even more festive and celebratory. Other major buildings, landmarks and facilities include the Botanic Gardens on the north end of this one-way road. The Goodwood Park Hotel is on the near by street of Scotts Road. This monument serves as a primary example of colonial architecture. TANGS department store is situated at the junction of Scotts Street and Orchard. It is the first of the upscale department stores in the area. Next to the historic Emerald Hill is the Cold Storage supermarket. This is one of the oldest surviving stores in the area. A trip down this historic street offers great landmarks, elements of Singapore’s cultural heritage as well as great shopping opportunities.

Dubai’s History

Remains that were found by archaeologists to the Northeast of Dubai, in Al-Qusais, are evidence that long before the sparkling city came to be the architectural wonder that it is today, long before the tourists started traveling to this city-state to enjoy the many five star Dubai hotels, there had been settlers in the region. These artifacts date back to approximately eight thousand B.C. Not much is known about those early inhabitants, nothing at all is known about the development of Dubai until the Portuguese were occupying the region in the 1600′s. Dubai was subsequently occupied throughout the years by France, then the Netherlands, and finally by Great Britain. Trade and commerce with India provided the local people with their living, as well as the famous pearls. Divers still dive for pearls of the coasts of Dubai today. The rest of the United Arab Emirates enjoyed the prosperity and the power in the region, but not yet Dubai. In the first half of the 1800′s, eight hundred tribe members of Bani Yas moved into Dubai, and turned this small fishing and pearl diving town into a village.

Then, just at the end of the nineteenth century, Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher al-Maktoum removed the taxation on the port, and began the first step in the transformation of modern phenomenal economics that would set in course, Dubai becoming the mecca that it is today. The pearling industry collapsed but due to the port, being one of the major ports in the region, Dubai continued to prosper. The waters of the Dubai Creek were dredged so as to provide room for bigger ships to dock, and throughout the 1900′s two men secured the city’s reputation, Sheikh Saeed and Sheikh Rashid, as the hub for trading in the entire region of the Gulf. Sheikh Rashid was the leader of Dubai, serving as well as Prime Minister until his death in 1990. Now the country’s leader is Sheikh Mo, and the plans for future developments continue to become more outrageous and grand.
