Carbonite: The Importance of Data Backup Cannot Be Overstated

Though it’s especially true for businesses, data loss prevention affects 43% of PC users, and can be just as devastating. Backing up your personal or business files and database is of paramount importance. These days, all it takes is one strong worm or virus and your data could be forever lost.

Carbonite is a data backup client offering data protection with a 15 Petabyte storage capacity, providing internet and computer users an indispensable service, at a bargain rate of only mere pennies a day. They also offer a 15-day free trial, which will give you a nice introduction to their services.

Once Carbonite data backup is setup on your computer, it requires little ongoing work on behalf of the user. It reads and stores your data as long as you’re on the internet, and users can also log on to the Carbonite site and access their files.

Also, there are no limits on backup storage capacity. Carbonite will back up all the supported files on your internal hard drive whether you have 1GB, 10GB or more. However, users should be aware that the speed of today’s DSL and cable internet services
will make it very slow to back up more than, say, a few dozen GB of data.

“Backup” refers to making copies of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after an incident of data loss. These additional copies are typically called “backups.” Backups are useful, primarily for two purposes. The first is to restore a state following a disaster, a.k.a. disaster recovery. The second is to restore small numbers of files after they have been accidentally deleted or corrupted.

66% of internet users have suffered from serious data loss!

It doesn’t take a computer scientist to parse the fact that data backup should be equivalent to getting car insurance, or boiling unsafe drinking water; in short, a given.

Knowledge Lost on a Path

I was walking my dog along the water canal that runs behind my condominium complex when I noticed up ahead what seemed to be a dead horse lying in the middle of the path. My dog wasn’t alerted by this, so I figured my eyes must be deceiving me, plus I wasn’t wearing my glasses. As we slowly approached, my dog still uninterested, I could tell that my first impression that it was a horse was indeed wrong, but I still couldn’t make our what exactly was laying in the middle of the narrow path. I stopped, my dog now taking an interest in the dark brown figure laying directly in front of us. I let my dog off his leash to see if what his Akita instincts would do about this thing in our path. He just sat there, so I slowly approached, inch by inch, my dogs hackles raised. Probably due to my state of mind, curiously scared. I finally reached the object of intrigue, Ah…a duffel bag. Fully packed, bulging at the seams.

I looked to see if anyone was around, and there was no one insight. I often find ransacked items along the canal; left by druggies or homeless people, but this duffel bag appears untouched and heavy. My dog moved on ahead, not interested at all in what could be inside this mysterious bag. I knelt down to see if there was a name or address written on it somewhere, I had a difficult time doing this due to it’s heaviness. I finally found a tag ‘Singapore Boutique Hotel‘ sewn near the pull string opening. I loosened up the pull string that held the opening closed tight. As I did, it’s contents burst out. Books, travel books, loose paper with travel notes written all over them and travel journal books. Where the heck did this come from? And why was it just left in the middle of this water canal path?

It took awhile to search through all of the contents of this once thought dead horse, but as I now know to be a duffel bag full of what used to be the contents in someones bookshelf of someones home. A someone who adored reading about travel and writing about travel. Someone I would’ve like to have known, but no name or address was to be found anywhere amongst all this writing, all this someones labor of love. I re-pack the the duffel bag. Tighten the pull string and caught up with my dog waiting patiently for me to continue the walk. We both looked back at the duffel bag, my dog looked back up at me. I shrugged. We turned back around and continued our daily walk.

Letting your child travel to Europe

Traveling to Europe is seen as a rite of passage to most American teenagers. As children, they study world maps, hoping to someday travel to the places they learn about in school. Parents, however may be weary to send their children abroad. The state of the map of the world in politics is not always favorable towards Americans.

A way that might ease the tension of a trip is for both the child and parents to actually sit down with their children, and a map of Europe and plan a trip together. This way the parents are able to see the route their child is taking and the child will feel like they have planned it all on their own.

Traveling abroad can be scary for any American. The United States map does not operate the same as Europe. European transportation is different from many US cities. Also, creature comforts are not the same as in the United States. Let your child know that their electronic appliances will not work without a proper converter. That plus, all of the weird food your child will encounter is enough to stress out any parent.

The key to safely letting your child study or go abroad is to make sure they know they can count on you if a problem arises. As long as you give them all the necessary tools, there should be no fear in sending your child abroad. Make sure your child knows where the American Embassy is in each country he/she is visiting in case of emergency. Also make sure to give your child some European money, or Euros before they even depart from the States. Having that money right of the plane will take a little pressure and stress off of getting settled into their European trip.

Most of all remember that it’s all about your child having new experiences and to support their decision to try something new and learn about new cultures.

Cape Town Book Fair

Cape Town is a thriving South African city with a major focus on supporting the arts and cultural heritage. The Cape Town Book fair takes place annually and brings together authors, publishers, students and readers to share their thoughts and experiences. It is also an educational opportunity where skills are discussed and mentored. The book fair specifically celebrates South African writers, though as with all fields, international awareness is essential. Most of the attendees at the fair are local residents, though many writers and literature enthusiasts from all over South Africa come in for the event. It is also a popular attraction for tourists who are lucky enough to be visiting the city during the fair days. Many people make new friends and working associates at this major networking opportunity. It’s common for an evening of Cape Town fine dining to conclude a busy day at the book fair. This year’s fair saw thousands of book lovers descend upon Cape Town. While the focus of the fair is to celebrate South African writers, one if its primary intent is to expose great new works of literature to the international market.

Megan Voysey-Braig received this year’s European Union Literary Award for her unpublished novel Till We Can Keep An Animal. The award is intended for first time novelists who have an unpublished book that will be attractive to international audiences. As part of the award Voysey-Braig will have her book published by Jacana Media. She will have her work included in next year’s Exclusive Books Homebru collection. Voysey-Braig stated in an interview that she considers writing to be a personal obsession, and even equates it to a type of madness. Along with that she expressed her love for writing and describes it as an opportunity for self-expression. This was Voysey-Braig’s first novel and with the success it’s received prior to publishing she is likely to have a strong career ahead of her.

Toyota Event Sponsored By Award-Winning Yokohama Tires

Yokohama Tire Corp. sponsored Toyotafest, which was held on May 9 at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif. More than 370 new and vintage Toyotas were on display at the event. Yokohama had a prominent display of its full line of tires, including its recently launched ADVAN Neova AD08 and its soon-to-be-released eco-friendly dB Super E-spec.

Yokohama’s ADVAN Neova AD08 has replaced the AD07 for 2009. The new tire improves dry grip, wet grip and mileage. It’s street civil, but track approved. For the performance inclined, the AD08 improves on the AD07′s lap times, by a half second for every minute, says Yokohama. The improvements are achieved with a new micro silica compound, steel sidewall inserts and revised tread pattern.

The result is quicker steering response, improved stability and a larger contact patch while cornering. The tire maintains its treadwear rating of 180 and will be offered in a wider range of sizes than its predecessor; 32 sizes, ranging from 205/50-R15 to 295/30ZR-19. Road and Track Magazine says, “the new Yokohama AD08 is a winner.”

The db Super E-spec has fitments on the Toyota Prius. Yokohama Tire Corporation’s dB Super E-spec, an all-new consumer passenger car tire which uses citrus oil instead of petroleum, earned one of Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Awards at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas last year.

The award, one of 14 given out, went to companies “in recognition of outstanding achievement in new product and design.” Popular Mechanics editors combed the thousand of new wheel and tire packages on display at both the SEMA and AAPEX shows to find the winners.

Jim Meigs, Popular Mechanics’ editor-in-chief, pointed to the dB Super E-spec’s low rolling resistance and use of natural materials as reasons why it was chosen.

“Yokohama Tire Corporation is using technology to make better tires for consumers and the environment,” said Fred Koplin. “Popular Mechanics has a long history of recognizing companies for their technology and product innovations. We’re honored they selected the dB Super E-spec. It’s great that Yokohama, which has a heritage for high-performance, is now being recognized for our environmental and technical achievements as well.”

Palau de la Musica Catalana

The Palau de la Musica Catalana is a major landmark in Barcelona. It was designed by architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner and was built between the years 1905 and 1908. The design for the building is based on the Catalan modernist style, which was contemporary to the time. The original intention of the building was to house the prominent Orfeo Catala, which was the leading Catalan cultural element of the time. In 1997 this amazingly beautiful building was declared as a World Heritage Site and continues to astound tourists from around the world. Many guests at five star Barcelona hotels plan to include a tour of the Palau as one of their prime vacation activities.

The Catalan modernist design of the building is evident in the structural curves that predominate the smooth, straight lines. It is richly decorated with spectacular carvings emphasizing floral and organic themes. The grand façade includes stained glass, glass tiles and mosaics to give the feeling of transparency and openness. One of the unique aspects of this modernistic building is its focus on function. Not only is it beautiful it was designed with state of the art technology. It is believed that Montaner created the design in response to many requests for establishing an emblem of Catalan national characters.

The Lluis Millet Hall on the second floor provides a gorgeous reception area for concert goers. It is named after one of the founders of the building and is a solid reminder of the purpose of its construction. The hall also serves as a small lecture venue for Palau tours. Among the many ornate structures are sculpted bronze busts of prominent musicians that have been associated with the building. These include the great Spanish cellist Pablo Casals, pianist Rosa Sabater, and Eduardo Toldra, who was one of the founders of the Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona. Visitors to the Palau are surrounded by the beauty and greatness of Catalan history and culture and often take a moment to reflect on this as they enjoy the many views offered by this hall.

How To Win On Clay

Clay tennis courts are the slowest of tennis court surfaces. Unlike grass or hard courts, clay courts reduce the forward velocity of a tennis court. There are positives and negatives to the slow surface: Players have more time to get after each ball, so the game strategies are usually a little more methodical and calculated. However, it’s less likely to witness a power game on clay.

Patience and tactical prowess are important qualities for tennis players to possess when competing on these types of courts. The French Open live is played on clay courts at the famed Roland Garros stadium. This venue has tripped up many famous tennis champs, the clay being a little too unpredictable to handle.

There are some athletes who know how to work the clay. These players are considered to be “specialists” of this kind of surface: they’ve honed their talents and know how to use the slower surface to their advantage. Such players who have thrived on the Roland Garros courts include: Carlos Moya, Chrissie Evert, Monica Seles, Bjorn Borg, Steffi Graf, and Martina Navratilova.

Grand Slam winners who have won the French Openoften incorporate the tactic of aiming for the far corner opposite their opponent’s position. It’s not common to win a match with one forceful shot; champs know that it takes time and skill to confuse their battle mate.

Wimbledon is the next Grand Slam event, which have much different surfaces. Wimbledon highlights are always exciting because the games are played on grass surfaces, enabling a fast-paced and thrilling game.

Low Cost Shoulder Surgery

Shoulder surgery costs are generally high these days in the United States, Canada, and Europe. To avoid these high rates along with long wait times for the procedure, many are looking at medical tourism as a viable alternative. Combining surgery with a visit to a country that presents interesting vacation opportunities is a great idea, especially when medical costs are cut to sometimes more than 50%.

For people with arthritis of the shoulder or problems with their rotator cuff, shoulder resurfacing becomes an ideal alternative to full shoulder replacement. However when there is a sufficient loss of bone due to fractures and breaks, or when tumors are present, it is best to replace the joint. This procedure includes removing scar tissue, realigning muscles, and replacing deteriorated areas with prosthetics. In either case and depending on the diagnosis, shoulder resurfacing or replacement usually returns the area to almost 100% of its function.

Generally it takes 2 to 4 days of recovery in hospital after surgery. Cheap shoulder surgery by highly qualified doctors in India, Mexico, Costa Rica, and elsewhere allows patients to spend less money on their procedure and more on a vacation after their hospital stay. Many people find that this makes a great balance: enduring a surgery and then being rewarded by a few days of enjoyment and discovery.

The True Beauty of Spain

The history of Valencia, Spain spans thousands of years, from the day Roman soldiers set up camp along the Turia River. This is today, one of the most progressive and modern cities in Spain, with art museums, festivals and luxury hotels, Valencia has become a hot spot for travel in the country as well as for those around the world. The city is known for their design in their architecture and the flawless beauty of the city streets. Many archaeological discoveries have been made throughout the city, giving evidence that the Roman architects ‘knew what they were doing’, their influence on the city was well constructed and still remains.

Now the streets are lined with avant garde movie theaters and artsy cafes. Many of the most exciting and most attended festivals of the country are held in this city, and the cultural and musical and artistic scenes in this city should keep Manhattan, Paris, and San Francisco on their toes. There are more than forty museums in the city, one being the second most visited tourist attraction in all of Spain, The City of Arts and Sciences. And while the tourists flow in, the traditional culture and character has not been lost in this city, a sad occurrence that happens in many of Europe’s well traveled cities. While all cultures are embraced and welcomed here, the city never has lost its individuality. Through dance, and music, and food, the traditions remain.

And the food…this city has the distinct honor as the city that created Paella. The ingredients and produce used in the cooking is among the most fresh in the world. And while tasty and plentiful, all dishes are healthy and fresh. Whether at a fine dining establishment, or a small tapas bar, the cuisine is gastronomically phenomenal. Adding to the experience is the lush and fertile landscape surrounding Valencia. The waterways were designed to irrigate the fields using water from Turia River. Many gardens of vegetables and citrus orchards line the hillsides. Along with of course, the vineyards and the olive trees. Also close at hand is the Mediterranean Sea which offers up the freshest seafood, contributing to the reputation of the paella. Valencia is a feast, for the eyes, the ears, and the body, for all the senses.

Basquiat, Within the Walls

Many legends and myths surround the incredible city of New York. Most stories tend to surround the supposed haunting of some of the finer New York restaurants and hotels. One rumor, dealing with a person from the past, not a ghost, happened to prove true in SoHo. An old building was being renovated into a complex of luxury condos…this is where it always begins, in the old buildings, and a graffiti mural was found within the walls. What was discovered was the work of the early street art pioneers, in the dilapidated ten story building being torn down. The large mural was created with magic markers, grease pencils, spray paint, and anything else that was available to make a mark. It contained various images and writings in a plethora of colors and styles, indicating that it must have been a collaborative effort. Representations of cakes and hearts, and an airplane were among the images painted.

During the 1970′s the loft was owned by Edit DeAk, a well known art critic. During this time is when street and outsider art was becoming valid in the Manhattan artistic circles. With the exception of holes drilled through the wall for a few kitchen appliances, the mural is intact. Stylized writings on the mural have led experts to conclude that the work was created by Jean Michel Basquiat. The artists tag signature was found in the staircase, SAMO. And although Basquiat became well known, and whose work is sold for millions today, what the art historians are putting significance on his the simple history, relating to all the artists creating street art at that time thirty years ago. It is the beginnings of the graffiti art form. The rumor that there was art within the walls of the building had been talked about for years, some did not believe that it was true. The mural was excavated and placed on display with the other icons of the time, in Gallery 151 in SoHo
