Sport in Scotland
Scotland may be known for its Highlands and bagpipes, but the country also has a strong sporting tradition. Scotsmen take great pride in their home teams and the country has hosteda number of international competitions over the years. Fan flock to the country to attend the big sporting events, filling up the local hotels, hostels, and holiday cottages Scotland. Pubs and bars are prime places to celebrate victories or drown sorrows after a loss.
It’s impossible to think about sports in Scotland without considering golf. Golf was born here and every year thousands of fans make their way to St. Andrews in Fife which is the international “Home of Golf.” One of the oldest links courses is here. The Old Course has been in existence since the mid-sixteenth century. While you really can’t go anywhere in Scotland without passing a golf course, some of the more famous ones include Royal Troon, Carnoustie, Muirfield, and Gleneagles.
The world’s second oldest national football association is here. The earliest recorded football games in Scotland were in 1424 and the game has been played in different variations over the centuries, resulting in Association Football becoming the national sport. Scottish teams have brought home the European Cup, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup. Scotland is the home of the Scottish Cup which is the world’s oldes national trophy in the sport.
Scotland also has a thriving rugby community with their own Scottish Rugby Union. In addition to the Rugby League World Cup and the Rugby Union World Cup, Scotland is also represented in the Cricket World Cup, the FIFA World Cup, and the Commonwealth Games. The one international competition that they don’t attend as an independent nation is the Olympic Games. Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games twice in the last forty years and will be the host country again in 2014.
The country is also host to the Highland Games and enjoys success in the sports of shinty and curling.
